![]() If you grew up with your family worrying about image and money then it may not be entirely uncomfortable. Life as an officer, at least in the air force, means entering into a part of society viewed as a sort of spectacle. As an officer you may expect a greater degree of freedom, but it is only true financially (and you have the ability to be a complete ass to enlisted people if you choose awful but very common). It is absolutely true and there is a reason the tongue-and-cheek moniker "G.I" exists for soldiers. More importantly you should note I described myself as expensive property. You have to wait 10 years to become a major and, by that time, engineering is far more lucrative. On the other hand I have noticed my engineering friends' civilian compensation creeping up very quickly and without the constraints of a federally mandated salary based solely on time. I have a couple medical problems taken care of without any hassle because the government typically doesn't like their expensive property to be decommissioned early. The positives are that, up until this point, the compensation is far above competitive for anyone but a petroleum engineer. I am currently a captain in the US air force with five years in.
